Section 02 · What LMAX Digital offers

What LMAX Digital offers

LMAX Digital is the institutional crypto venue under LMAX Group, patterned on the institutional FX market with multi-protocol connectivity: FIX 4.2 and FIX 4.4 for order entry, ITCH for low-latency market data, Drop Copy over FIX 4.4 for post-trade auditing, plus REST and WebSocket for standard flows. BTC and ETH perpetual futures launched in Q3 2025 (cash-settled). The venue is institutional-only with minimum notional order sizes enforced per instrument; there is no retail access. Endpoint specifics change over time. The shape is durable; the precise rate-limit weights, fee tiers and instrument lists live in LMAX's docs.

Markets and strategy patterns

  • FIX 4.4 institutional order entry
  • ITCH-based market-data consumers
  • Drop Copy auditing flows over FIX 4.4
  • BTC and ETH perpetual futures (cash-settled)
  • Spot strategies on BTC, ETH and major USD/USDT pairs
  • Co-located low-latency execution
  • Minimum notional order sizes per instrument
  • Institutional desk and prime-brokerage flows

API surface

Product surfaces
Institutional spot on BTC, ETH and major USD/USDT pairs, plus BTC and ETH perpetual futures launched in Q3 2025 (cash-settled, with up to 100x leverage in approved tiers). LMAX Digital is institutional-only; there is no retail access. Minimum notional order sizes are enforced per instrument.
Connection methods
FIX 4.2 and FIX 4.4 for order entry. ITCH for low-latency market data. Drop Copy over FIX 4.4 for post-trade auditing. REST and WebSocket for standard order management and market-data streaming. Protocol choice determines feature set: Drop Copy is FIX 4.4 only.
Authentication
FIX sessions authenticate at logon with SenderCompID, TargetCompID and a per-session secret negotiated during onboarding. REST and WebSocket use API key/secret pairs scoped to specific functions. Onboarding is institutional: KYC, agreements and credentialing run through LMAX rather than self-service.

Specific endpoints, FIX message types, rate-limit weights, instrument lists, fee schedule and version history live in LMAX's documentation. Treat these as the source of truth.

Section 03 · Build with AI

Build your LMAX Digital strategy with AI

LMAX Digital is FIX-first and institutional. Pick FIX 4.4 with ITCH for low-latency execution, or native REST/WebSocket for standard flows, author your strategy in an AI IDE, and let TradingHost run it. Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and CLI-based AI agents all work with the same GitHub-native deployment loop.

  • Native FIX 4.4 + ITCH

FIX 4.4 for order entry plus ITCH for low-latency market data. Drop Copy over FIX 4.4 for post-trade auditing. The canonical institutional integration path.

  • Native REST and WebSocket

REST and WebSocket for standard order management and market-data streaming. Lower operational complexity than FIX, sufficient for non-low-latency strategies.

  • Custom institutional adapter

Your firm’s internal trading engine plus a QuickFIX-style 4.4 adapter, or a bespoke FIX engine tuned for the LMAX co-location latency target.

  • Retail frameworks

CCXT, Freqtrade and Hummingbot do not list LMAX Digital among supported exchanges. Strategies routed through LMAX must use FIX or native REST directly.

Connection method support for LMAX Digital

LMAX Digital is institutional-only. Retail frameworks (CCXT, Freqtrade, Hummingbot) do not list it among supported exchanges. The matrix below maps native connection methods against product coverage.

✓ confirmed support per official docs. "no" indicates not officially documented as supported. "partial" indicates limited coverage (FIX 4.2 lacks Drop Copy and full perp instrument mapping). Workflow links target /workflows/ pages currently in authoring.

TradingHost does not force a framework. It runs your project.

Author with AI

The integration paths above pair naturally with AI IDEs. The TradingHost MCP control surface closes the loop: AI tools can inspect deployments, review logs and manage the runtime alongside you, never the trade execution path.

Section 04 · Run on TradingHost

Run your code on TradingHost

LMAX Digital provides the exchange and API access. TradingHost provides the production environment where your LMAX Digital-connected strategy runs.

Instead of running strategy code on a desktop machine, generic VPS or manually configured server, your firm deploys from GitHub into a TradingHost-managed container runtime.

You

  • Your repo contains your code.
  • Your deployment defines how it runs.
  • Your firm’s strategy connects to LMAX Digital.

TradingHost

  • Keeps the runtime online.
  • Surfaces logs and health checks.
  • Region selection.
  • Controlled deployment surface.

Deployment flow

  1. STEP 01

    Connect GitHub

Authorise TradingHost to access your firm’s GitHub organisation or account.

  2. STEP 02

Link a repo or bring your own FIX adapter

Point TradingHost at your existing strategy repo. The typical starter pairs a QuickFIX-compatible 4.4 adapter with your strategy logic, plus an ITCH consumer for low-latency market data.

  3. STEP 03

    Deploy into a TradingHost container

Pick a region (EU or US-East, with EU closest to LMAX's London matching engine), supply the environment values your strategy needs (FIX session credentials, SenderCompID / TargetCompID, REST API keys), and deploy. TradingHost builds your container from the repo and runs your strategy on managed Kubernetes infrastructure. No local Docker install required.

  4. STEP 04

    Monitor logs and health

Watch live logs, health and runtime state from the TradingHost dashboard. The same surface is reachable through MCP from any AI IDE, so Cursor, Claude Code or a CLI agent can read deployment state and manage the runtime alongside your desk.

  5. STEP 05

    Update and redeploy

Push changes to your GitHub main branch and TradingHost redeploys automatically.

Section 05 · Operational notes

Operational notes for LMAX Digital

Things that bite a firm when it actually runs an LMAX Digital strategy in a containerised cloud runtime, not in LMAX's docs, not in framework READMEs. Every claim below is quoted or paraphrased from LMAX's own documentation; the deployment-side guidance is from running these strategies on TradingHost.

  1. 01 · Multi-protocol

FIX 4.4 unlocks Drop Copy; FIX 4.2 and REST do not

LMAX Digital exposes multiple protocols and the feature set differs between them: FIX 4.4 supports Drop Copy for post-trade auditing, FIX 4.2 does not, and REST/WebSocket carry standard order management without Drop Copy. If your firm's compliance or risk stack requires Drop Copy, the integration target must be FIX 4.4 rather than the older protocols. Document the protocol choice in the strategy repo so a redeploy never silently downgrades to a protocol without the feature you depend on.

  2. 02 · Institutional minimums

Minimum notional order sizes enforced per instrument

LMAX Digital is institutional-only with minimum notional order sizes enforced per instrument. A small order that would route fine on a retail spot venue is rejected at LMAX. Encode the per-instrument minimum as an order-router precondition; do not rely on retries to discover the threshold experimentally. The minimums are documented in LMAX's institutional factsheet but the exact figure per instrument can change, so query them at strategy startup rather than hard-coding.

  3. 03 · Q3 2025 perps

BTC and ETH perpetual futures launched Q3 2025 with up to 100x leverage

LMAX Digital launched BTC and ETH perpetual futures in Q3 2025 (cash-settled). Approved tiers can trade with up to 100x leverage, but margin and liquidation parameters are tier-specific and enforced at the exchange level. The perp launch postdates protocol stabilization on the spot side, so a firm running spot strategies that pre-dated the perp launch may need to refresh its instrument-master before perp instruments appear. Verify the instrument list against the current docs before assuming a perp symbol exists.

  4. 04 · Co-location

Sub-10ms ack latencies require co-location, not just the protocol choice

LMAX Digital publishes sub-10ms ack latencies for co-located participants. The latency target is conditioned on physical proximity to LMAX's London matching engine; a strategy connecting from a generic public-cloud region in another continent will not see the headline latency, regardless of protocol. If sub-10ms is a strategy requirement, plan a co-location arrangement directly with LMAX rather than expecting a cloud runtime to deliver it. The TradingHost EU region is a strong base for low-latency LMAX strategies, but LMAX co-location is a separate commercial discussion.

  5. 05 · Onboarding

KYC and credential issuance run through LMAX, not self-service

LMAX Digital onboarding is institutional in pace: KYC, agreements and credentialing run through LMAX rather than self-service. FIX SenderCompID, TargetCompID and per-session secrets are issued during onboarding; REST/WS API key pairs follow the same process. Lead time for new sessions can be days, not minutes. Plan the firm's strategy launch timeline accordingly, and treat session credentials as long-lived institutional assets rather than per-strategy throwaways.

Section 08 · FAQ

FAQ

No. TradingHost is independent and is not affiliated with LMAX Digital or LMAX Group.

No. Your strategy code connects to LMAX Digital and sends instructions according to your own logic, account permissions and integration method. TradingHost provides the runtime where that code runs.

No. LMAX Digital API access is provided by LMAX. Your firm is responsible for the LMAX account, API permissions, credentials and compliance with LMAX’s terms.

No. TradingHost is the cloud runtime where your strategy code runs. We do not provide signals, AI prediction models or pre-built bots. With TradingHost your firm writes or generates the strategy yourselves (often with Cursor or Claude Code), keeps it in GitHub as your code, and uses TradingHost to run it in production. 3Commas, Cryptohopper and similar products own the strategy logic; TradingHost runs your strategy.

AWS and DigitalOcean give you raw compute. You handle OS updates, container orchestration, log shipping, secret rotation, region failover and uptime monitoring yourself. TradingHost gives you a managed runtime purpose-built for trading strategies: GitHub-native deployment, MCP-driven control from AI IDEs, log and health surfaces out of the box. If you want to operate the infrastructure yourself, AWS works. If you want the runtime as a managed service, TradingHost is the shorter path.

Yes. TradingHost runs Python strategies; pair them with a QuickFIX-compatible adapter for FIX 4.4 or with the REST/WebSocket APIs. Java and C++ are common at institutional desks because of the mature FIX engine ecosystems and the latency profile.

Yes. TradingHost supports any language that can run inside a container. Java and C++ are particularly common at LMAX-bound institutional desks because of mature FIX engine ecosystems.

CCXT does not list LMAX Digital among supported exchanges, and neither do Freqtrade or Hummingbot. LMAX Digital is institutional and FIX-first; integrations target FIX 4.4 (with ITCH for market data), FIX 4.2 (legacy sessions), or the native REST and WebSocket APIs directly. See the Build with AI section above for the supported integration methods.

Yes. LMAX Digital launched BTC and ETH perpetual futures in Q3 2025 (cash-settled). Approved tiers can trade with up to 100x leverage; margin and liquidation parameters are tier-specific and enforced at the exchange. Your strategy code authenticates against the same FIX 4.4 or REST surface used for spot, and TradingHost runs the container regardless of whether the strategy is spot, perp or both.

LMAX onboarding is institutional in pace; once your firm has an LMAX account with FIX or REST credentials provisioned, point a TradingHost runtime at your strategy repo. The typical starter pairs a QuickFIX-compatible 4.4 adapter and an ITCH market-data consumer with your strategy logic. Linking a GitHub repo and creating a strategy is free; runtime plans are listed on the pricing page.

In your firm's GitHub-controlled secrets workflow. TradingHost reads them at runtime through GitHub repository secrets, environment secrets or your firm's approved secret-management process. TradingHost does not need custody of your FIX session credentials or REST API keys. See platform secrets for the full handling model.

No. Strategies should never need withdrawal permissions. Use scoped trading-only credentials and keep withdrawal capabilities on a separate manually-managed credential set, off the runtime entirely. Institutional onboarding typically issues separate operational and trading credentials by default.

Yes. TradingHost supports MCP-based control for AI IDEs including Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and CLI-based AI agents. AI tools can inspect deployments, review logs, restart strategies and manage runtime workflows. MCP is a control and observability surface, not the trade execution path. See the MCP control surface for the full picture.

Both. The MCP control surface works equally well from CLI-based agents (Claude Code CLI, custom MCP clients, scripted MCP calls) and from inside an IDE. The GitHub-native deployment loop also works without any AI tooling: a regular git push to your main branch triggers a redeploy.

The runtime detects the crash and exposes the relevant logs and health information. Where supported, the affected strategy can be restarted without disrupting other strategies running in the same container. Your strategy code is still responsible for safe error handling, duplicate-order protection and risk controls. FIX sessions in particular need clean logout/relogon sequencing to avoid resend storms after a restart. See observability for the logs and health surface.

Not without co-location. LMAX Digital publishes sub-10ms ack latencies for co-located participants; that figure is conditioned on physical proximity to LMAX’s matching engine in London. The TradingHost EU region is a strong base for low-latency LMAX strategies, but a sub-10ms target requires a separate co-location arrangement directly with LMAX. Plan strategy latency budgets against the actual cloud-to-LMAX path, not the headline co-located number. See the Operational notes section above for the full guidance.

TradingHost runs in the EU and US-East regions. For LMAX Digital, the EU region is the natural choice because LMAX's matching engine is in London. See the regions page for routing and proximity details.

No. TradingHost is focused on production runtime and deployment. Backtesting belongs in your firm’s research stack, framework or AlgoBuilder.
